Do The Interview: Rule of Thirds

Should you ever turn down a media interview?

Yes.

For example, if your organization has nothing to do with the topic being written about, tell the reporter the story doesn’t make sense for your company.

But too often, spokespersons pass up a news story they should be a part of. Fearing a negative story is not reason enough to decline an interview – in fact, knowing a tough story is coming is more of a reason to do the interview.

Generally speaking, spokespersons should grant the vast majority of interview requests.

In this video media training tip, I discuss the rule of thirds. I recommend you apply the rule of thirds when deciding whether or not to grant a media interview.
